The next ship out of dry dock and into the game is the tier VII cruiser USS Atlanta.
Historically, USS Atlanta was the lead vessel in her class of light cruisers. Unlike previous light cruisers, Atlanta and her sisters were designed to combat aircraft. To accomplish this, she was equipped with an utterly devastating amount of AA firepower.
The Atlanta-class vessels were heavily involved in combat throughout the war in the Pacific. Atlanta herself made her debut during the Battle of Midway. She and her sister Juneau both participated at Guadalcanal in late 1942. Atlanta was responsible for sinking the destroyer Akatsuki. Unfortunately, both Atlanta and Juneau were sunk during this engagement. The remaining Atlanta-class vessels survived the war, proving themselves as dependable and effective fighting ships.
In World of Warships, Atlanta is known for her ability to barrage the enemy with enormous amounts of shells, and her bristling anti-aircraft armament makes her a hard-counter to all but the most sustained carrier attacks. She comes equipped with eight double-gunned 127mm emplacements for her primary armament. “Only 127mm,” you ask? Certainly not the most impressive caliber, but her rapid rate of fire closes the door on any question about her combat ability—she’s an absolutely devastating enemy to face!
Atlanta stands apart from her tier VII cruiser counterparts, Pensacola and Myoko, in that she’s clearly a more close-range fighter. Her guns only have an 11km range and her torpedoes only travel 4.5km. But to offset some of that, her 11km surface detectability range is much better than either of the other tier VII cruisers. That means, with some clever maneuvering (and she’s got the agility to do it), she can close the gap on the enemy front lines and launch those first few pivotal volleys before being spotted. That being said, it’s always better to travel with allies and bring a wrecking ball of a strike force into combat.
Atlanta in a Nutshell
- Fast and maneuverable (32.8 knots with a 610m turning radius)
- Surrenders distance on her guns for incredibly fast firing speed and a low detectability rating
- Stellar anti-aircraft armament
- A much better team-fighter than solo-artist
